Baldwin aiming for Us stability

By BBC Sport
Thursday, 4th February 2010
Baldwin aiming for Us stability.

Former Histon chairman Gareth Baldwin is confident he can bring stability to Cambridge United once his place on the board is finalised.Baldwin is set to join the U's board in a commercial capacity just weeks after stepping down after 17 years at the helm at local rivals Histon.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "There are some bridges to be built and trust to be earned.

"I'm hoping to bring some stability to the boardroom and the Cambridge brand."

The U's have been on the look-out for additions to their board following the departure of George Rolls and Terry Baker in August.

With chairman Paul Barry operating out of Seattle, Baldwin says he is hoping to take some of the strain in terms of the day-to-day running of the club.

"I'm hoping to be involved with the club in lots as ways, not just on the commercial side," he said.

"Will Jones [press officer] and Gary Atyes [business development manager] are already doing a great job, but hopefully we can use some of my expertise."

Baldwin stepped down at Histon on health grounds after spending time in hospital in the early autumn.

He says he can appreciate why some U's fans may be sceptical about his swift arrival, but will be working hard to prove himself.

He said: "I was genuinely aiming to come in at the end of the season, but I just missed the football and the time seemed right.

"I can totally understand why Cambridge United fans might be nervous about someone who has been at Histon for all that time coming on board.

"But when I joined Histon they were an Eastern Counties First Division side and Cambridge were in the second tier.

"Nobody could have imagined the journey the two clubs would go on to become rivals."

I can assure people there is zero intention or desire to bring Steve Fallon or John Beck to Cambridge United

Gareth Baldwin

Baldwin believes the U's have the right ingredients in place for a return to the Football League, but insists they must aim for sustainable success.

He spent over a decade working with Steve Fallon at Histon, but denies the former Stutes boss is set to join him at the Abbey.

"I've met [current manager] Martin Ling and I've been very impressed. He's very focused, he's an absolute winner and all he wants is the support off the field to enable him to achieve success," he said.

"I can assure people there is zero intention or desire to bring Steve Fallon or [his assistant] John Beck to Cambridge United, I'm fully committed to what we have."
