Cambridge defender James Jennings will be available after winning an appeal against the red card he received during the win against Mansfield last weekend.Fellow defender Dave Partridge (back) faces a late fitness test but midfielder Alan Miller (ankle) is out.
Gateshead striker Johnny Allan suffered a recurrence of a knee injury in a midweek reserve match and misses out.
Defender James Curtis and striker Jon Shaw have both recovered from injury and could be in the starting line-up.
Cambridge United boss Martin Ling told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "They're a 4-4-2, got some good names in their team and are hardworking.
"I think a lot of teams will come to the Abbey looking to shut up shop and make it difficult for us to break them down, I don't think Gateshead will be any different.
"I will speak to [former Gateshead striker] Daryl Clare and he will input some knowledge into the match report."
