McAuley close to Cambridge return

By BBC Sport
Thursday, 29th July 2010
McAuley close to Cambridge return.

Cambridge United utility player Rory McAuley hopes to be back in first-team contention earlier than anticipated.McAuley had expected to be sidelined for six weeks following knee surgery in July, but the 20-year-old believes he can return to action ahead of schedule.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Hopefully I'll be back in training within a week or so.

"I'm sure physio Greg Reid won't let me rush into anything but that's what I want to try and aim for."

Martin Ling's side begin their Blue Square Bet Premier campaign away at Wrexham on 14 August and McAuley has his sights on an early-season outing.

I can play three positions, so it gives me an advantage over some of the other players

He said: "It's all looking quite good. Everything is how it should be.

"I'm just eager to get back and try and claim my shirt in the team."

McAuley played 27 times for the U's last season and can operate at right-back, centre-half and in central midfield.

The former Norwich City youngster believes his versatility will stand him in good stead as United target a play-off push.

"I've got a couple of strings to my bow," he said.

"I can play three positions, so it gives me an advantage over some of the other players."
