A second win in 6 days for United.
After monday's bank holiday victory against Eastbourne the confidence of the Cambridge players was high going into todays game at home to Gateshead, United ran out convincing 5-0 winners in a very one sided game.
United started the game defending the Newmarket Road End with one change from Mondays victory after Adam Miller took a knock during the game against Eastbourne. The visitors started the game brightest and should have been ahead after just 6 minutes when Jon Shaw found space inside the area but could only put his shot wide. That was to be just about Gatesheads only chance as United won a penalty shortly after, ex-Gateshead striker Daryl Clare stepped up but his weak effort was saved the keeper who guessed the right way. After more chances United did take the lead after Willmott sent a lovely ball through the middle of two defenders for Danny Wright to open his goalscoring accounts for United. Despite more chances for United, Gateshead nearly got themselves back into the game but some good defending denied what would of been a good chance. With the game at 1-0 Gateshead would probably have been glad at half time to only be one down but more chances for United early in the first half proved the gulf in class between the two sides, chance after chance finally paid off as Daryl Clare followed in a Danny Wright strike to head past the Gateshead keeper who was helpless having just made a save. This seemed to be the stepping stone for United as they went on to get a third, similar to the second, Marriots shot was this time blocked and Simon Russell was on hand to finish. Only two minutes elapsed before the fourth goal, a free-kick won in a dangerous area eventually being flicked home by United's Brian Saah. Gateshead were clearly despondant and Wayne Gray really put the icing on the cake for United also grabbing his first league goal for the club, another saved shot squared by Marriot and Gray headed home. United completely outplayed Gateshead and after riding an early spell of pressure never looked like losing this game.
