Match report on Cambridge's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wrexham.
Nervous excitement, new signings, optimism, fresh chants and fresh hopes. All words associated with the beginning of the new football season. Before United's away game at Wrexham everyone must of been feeling this way, but by the end not many of those words could be associated with the feelings of United fans after a 1-0 loss courtesy of a first half goal from Andy Morrel after a mistake from Dave Partridge.
The game begun with a minutes silence for Adams Stansfield very well respected by both sides, it wasn't long before the first stoppage with a dog coming onto the pitch just two minutes in, though Adam Miller was on hand to expertly remove the dog from the pitch. The U's had the better of the early chances with two corners in the first 10 minutes, although neither of them came to anything it was encouraging signs. After the early spell of pressure from United, Wrexham started to grind out some chances and bring themselves back into the game. Chances came for both sides Carden playing in Willmott to cross for Wright who could only hit the side netting with his strike and Wrexham finding a ball into the box which Brown in the Cambridge goal couldn't claim, luckily for United none of the Wrexham strikers could convert. Wrexham didn't have to wait long for the breakthrough though coming just 27 minutes into the game, Andy Morrell turning past Partridge and slotting cooly past Brown to put Wrexham 1-0 up. At this point you would expect United to come alive however it was the opposite, Wrexham pushed on and wave after wave of attack nearly found them adding to their lead before half-time but the defence, albeit shakily did manage to keep Wrexham from making it 2.
Half Time Wrexham 1-0 United
The start of the second half saw Josh Coulson coming on to replace Patridge. Coulson was called into action almost instantly after coming on and made a very good tackle to keep Knights-Percival out. United then quite literally came inches from grabbing an equaliser, Miller crashing a header goalwards which was cleared off the line and fell to Danny Wright who fired against the post. Both sides had efforts here and there but neither side had any real clean-cut chances, Platt was replaced by Marriot in a bid by Martin Ling to try and find the goal United needed however it never came. Cambridge continued pressing but were unable to find a way through Wrexhams stubborn defence. The welsh side also had chances on the break but United also defended well. After 4 minutes of stoppage time, the game was brought to an end with United losing 1-0.
Full time Wrexham 1-0 United
On a day where everything seemed to go against United they fought for the equaliser but just couldn't grind out the goal, not the worst start ever, but United's poor record against Wrexham continued. Now for Martin Ling to pick his side up for the arrival of big-spenders Crawley Town to The Abbey tuesday night.
