Cambridge United progressed to the Southern Section Area final of the LDV Vans Trophy when they defeated Brentford in dramatic style at Griffin Park, substitute Omer Riza scoring a Golden Goal winner in the 98th minute.

The game got off to a lively start and in the first minute Danny Chillingworth for the visitors saw his diving header fly just past the post.

At the other end on nine minutes Steve Hunt's strike from 20 yards was well saved by keeper Shaun Marshall and almost immediately another effort by Hunt was blocked in the box and Mark Williams drove wide of the target a minute later.

On the 20 minute mark Kevin O'Connor for the home side drilled a 25-yard effort just wide of the post and three minutes later Rowan Vine's volley from 25 yards was turned aside by Marshall for a corner.

Five minutes from the break a ball into the box was missed by Leo Roget and Dave Kitson saw his header directed straight at Phil Smith.

Two minutes from the break Brentford took the lead when a ball by Hunt was played into the box and Mark McCammon directed a header into the net beyond keeper Marshall.

On 58 minutes a low strike by Chillingworth was turned aside by Smith for a corner and at the other end Jay Smith fired just wide from 25 yards.

Fred Murray for the visitors fired just wide with a 30-yard left-foot strike on 73 minutes, four minutes later a foraging run from the halfway line by Vine ended when he fired in a right-foot effort from just inside the box and keeper Marshall made a fine save.

Five minutes from time United had a penalty appeal turned down when keeper Smith appeared to fell Kitson in the box and Fleming was yellow carded for dissent.

The U's equalised deep into injury time when Kitson, after forcing his way into the box, slotted the ball home at the second attempt.

Eight minutes into the extra 30 minutes United scored a dramatic winner when a long throughball was missed by Marshall and substitute Riza ran on and fired home.
